Meetings of Nobel Laureates:

Meetings of the students with Nobel Laureates and other scientific celebrities are always very exciting for the young generation. Inspired by their achievements, the young generation may opt for higher education and research in science. The Foundation conducts meetings of Nobel Laureates with Pakistani students/research scholars on regular basis. The purpose of these meetings is to inspire and to motivate Pakistani students, young scientists and research scholars to undertake world class research in various fields of science and technology. Another purpose is to develop science culture in the country and to broaden the outreach of the Pakistani scientists.

The first meeting of three Nobel Laureates viz; Prof. Charles H. Townes, Prof. lvar Giaever, Prof. Gerardus 't Hooft and a German scholar of Nuclear Medicine, Prof. L.E. Feinendegen with the Pakistani students/young scholars was organized by the Foundation in 2006. The second meeting of Nobel Laureates with Pakistani students/young scholars was held in March, 2007 at Islamabad and Lahore . Three Nobel Laureates, Prof. Klaus von Klitzing (Max Planck Inst. Stuttgart, Germany), Prof. Douglas Osheroff ( Stanford University , USA ) and Prof. Peter Courtland Agre (Duke University School of Medicine, USA) participated in the meeting.

The 2nd Meeting of Nobel Laureates with Pakistani Students/Young Scholars was organized by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in collaboration with Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Higher Education Commission (HEC), Ministry of Science & Technology (MoST) and Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS). Dr. N.M. Butt, Chairman, PSF and the Representative in Pakistan , Council for Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings, was the Chief Organizer. This five days meeting was held from 27-31 March, 2007 for three days at Islamabad and two days at Lahore . The Meeting was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman HEC/Federal Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister on Science & Technology. Other Government officials present on the occasion included Engineer Parvez Butt, Federal Secretary, MoST, Dr. N. M. Butt, Chairman, PSF and Mr. Waqar A. Butt, Deputy Chief Scientist/Secretary Organzing Committee. Two Nobel Laureates Prof. Klaus von Klitzing and Prof. Douglas Osheroff were also present on the occasion. About 400 persons from scientific institutions, research organizations and universities participated in the inaugural session.
