Awareness Seminar on Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020

Research vital to sustainable development: EU Deputy Head of Mission

ISLAMABAD (November 1, 2017): More Research and Innovation (R&I) are needed to develop in a sustainable way as well as meet the challenges facing the country, said Ms. Anne Marchal, Deputy Head of Mission, European Union (EU) Delegation to Pakistan on Tuesday.

She was speaking at an Awareness Seminar on EU Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020, jointly organized by the Pakistan (PSF) Science Foundation and EU Delegation to Pakistan at PSF. A large number of researchers and innovators from 30 institutions including universities and research institutions attended the seminar.

Ms. Anne Marchal said that R&I are drivers of economic development. She said that the EU researchers and innovators have cross-border collaboration and the EU is open to the world and the EU science has no boundary. The EU programme Horizon 2020 has 77 billion Euros budget and Pakistani researchers and innovators should benefit from this funding through joint projects with the EU partners, Ms. Marchal added. She said that low carbon resilient future, circular economy, digitization and transforming Industry and services integration, science for refugees and migration are top priority areas of collaborative projects.

The EU Deputy Head of Mission said that Pakistan does not have status of associate country and to get this status the researchers and innovators must show strong interest in EU’s R&I programme.

Speaking on this occasion, PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf said that the Foundation since its inception is striving for promotion of research through funding. He said that Research Support and Natural Science Linkages Programme are important programmes of PSF for research funding. Since the Foundation became focal organization of EU programmes in Pakistan the number of research project proposals has increased manifold, he added.

The PSF Chairman also spoke at length about similar research projects collaboration with other countries such as China, Turkey and Sri Lanka etc.
