PSF Awards Cash Prizes to Winners of Essay Contest

ISLAMABAD (May 15, 2018): The Winners of Essay Con-2017 were awarded cash prizes at an impressive ceremony at Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) on May 15, 2018.

His Excellency Mr. Erik Beishembiev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

The EssayCon-2017 was jointly organized by Pakistan Science Foundation and Technology Times, which was the 11th one of this series. The topic of the Essay contest was "Practical and Cost Effective Solutions to Control the Water Borne Diseases."

Mr. Tafakhar Ali Asdi, Member Finance PSF, Dr. Mirza Habib Ali, Director Research Support PSF, Dr. Raja Raziul Hasnain, Secretary PSF and Sayyed Paras Ali, Chief Executive Officer Technology Times and Tech TV were also present on this occasion. Scientists from various organizations, teachers and students from universities and other educational institutions attended the prize distribution ceremony.

Addressing the august gathering, the Chief Guest stressed that the policy makers must take seriously the essays and articles of the young writers. The Kyrgyz Ambassador said that environmental changes and global warming were prone to bring new diseases which could only be controlled by applying latest technologies.

The Ambassador congratulated the winner students saying that they were the future scientists and they have to find solutions to the newly emerging health problems.

Dr. Mirza Habib Ali, Director Research Support, PSF in his address highlighted the research funding and science popularization programmes of PSF.

He said that PSF was as an autonomous body working under the umbrella of Ministry of Science & Technology since 1973. It was established under an Act of parliament with the objective to promote scientific activities for research in universities and other public & private organizations to strengthen scientific and technological base for self-reliance in science & technology in line with socio-economic needs of the country, he added.

He said major functions of the Foundation are promotion and funding of scientific research, development and implementation of science popularization programs for advancement of science & technology, establishment of science centers, museums and planetariums etc. He said PSF has launched various programmes and incentives for the young students which include Science Talent Farming Scheme, participation in international competitions such as Asian Science Camps, London International Young Scientists Forums, quiz, essay, poster and scientific models competitions etc.

He said this competition was part of the Foundation’s Science Popularization Programme and the presence of the His Excellency was honour for PSF and a great encouragement for the students.

Sayyed Paras Ali, Chief Executive Officer Technology Times and Tech TV said that the EssayCon-2017 was the 11th one of the series and over 2000 entries were received in this contest.

He said that PSF and Technology Times started the essay writing competitions to bridge the communication gap between scientists, students and general public. He said that such competitions were vital for the popularization of science as fiction of today is the technology of tomorrow.

Mr. Tafakhar Ali Asdi, Member Finance PSF, delivering the vote of thanks said that such competitions are rare in the country. He said that these competitions are imperative to bring out the real talent of students. He expressed his sincere thanks to all the participants for making the event a success through their active participation.

At the end the winners of the competition were awarded cash prizes.
